Bringing languages to life – reformed GCSEs in French, German and Spanish
We are pleased to announce that we are currently reforming our suite of GCSE Modern Foreign Languages which offer a fresh, learner-focused approach to teaching languages.
Commenting on our new specifications is Kirsten Wilcock, Head of Language at Eduqas, “We are excited by the fresh approach to teaching languages that this new suite of qualifications will offer, putting at the heart of the learner’s experience the core vocabulary needed to use language in a wide range of contexts, and building proficiency via a carefully sequenced, incremental, and engaging curriculum.”
The reformed specifications will be available for teaching from September 2024, with first assessment in summer 2026.

- relevant real-world vocabulary devised in collaboration with language experts The National Centre for Excellence for Language Pedagogy (NCELP)to engage learners and develop their love of languages accessible and inclusive assessments designed to allow learners to succeed using different approaches
- video extracts of native speakers that offer visual cues in our listening assessment
- a combined reading and writing assessment that supports learners while reducing organisational burden on teachers.
Along with our unparalleled access to support, resources and expert-led training, these features make our new GCSE French, German and Spanish qualifications the natural choice for language teachers.
Draft specification and sample assessment materials (SAMs)
Our reformed GCSE French qualification has been submitted to Ofqual for accreditation. The draft speciation and SAMs are available to download from the following webpage.
FREE Training and Resources
To support teachers/lecturers to deliver our reformed qualification, we will deliver online and face-to-face introductory training in summer 2023, followed by a full programme of professional learning events.
Teachers/lecturers can also benefit from free Professional Development from NCELP, introducing teachers to the rationale behind the new GCSEs and the resources to support classroom and home learning.
