Eduqas Regional Representative Ant Fleming insights into his career and his current role supporting teachers and educational centres:
“Before joining Eduqas, I worked mainly as a Geography teacher for 18 years - I was both Head of Year and Head of Geography at a number of large schools in the East of England. I've also taught PE and a couple of vocational qualifications.
I have been an examiner for Eduqas since 2022 too, which was incredibly beneficial for my teaching, and still is for my work now – by the way, we’re always on the lookout for more Examiners, so do apply if you’re interested in joining the team!
As part of the Regional Support Team, which is made up entirely of experienced former teachers, my job is to enable centres to deliver Eduqas qualifications with confidence. My role involves responding to emails from teachers, hosting online meetings with both new and experienced Eduqas teachers, meeting face-to-face with networks of Exam Officers, delivering in-centre support, and representing Eduqas at conferences and similar events.
I was drawn to the role of Regional Rep because I firmly believe that supporting teachers is key to everyone’s success. It’s vital for the teacher to have someone they can talk to about any issues they come across, which is vital for the students who benefit from more confident teachers, which in turn is vital to the school’s success. Being able to offer that level of support to centres and teachers on behalf of Eduqas has been fantastic.
No two days are the same in this role! If I’m working from home, it might involve contacting prospective centres, responding to emails and picking up the phone to teachers who need a quick answer to a question. It can also include hosting online meetings with centres, trust curriculum partners, or subject networks.
If I have a face-to-face meeting, then it’s quite similar but involves travelling all over the country to support centres in need of help or delivering in-centre support to schools and colleges who’ve just joined us.
The most fulfilling part of my role is when teachers comment that they feel more confident after a meeting, or they mention that I was specifically recommended to them. Whether it is a centre with 2 students or one with 2000, it makes no difference to me; helping teachers is the best job in the world.
What I like most about working for Eduqas is that the people behind the email addresses and phone numbers on our website are all 100% dedicated to supporting teachers.
More than anything else, I enjoy helping teachers become the best they can be – that way they can better support their learners to become teachers, plumbers, actors or whatever else they want to be in life.”
