We’re committed to ensuring that all learners' scripts are marked and assessed fairly and accurately.
Examiners and moderators are vital to the delivery of our qualifications. We employ thousands of teachers, retired teachers, further education lecturers, and education specialists to ensure that the quality of our marking continues to be of the highest standards.
What does an examiner do?
The main role of an Eduqas exam marker is to make sure all our candidates’ work has been marked in line with our designated procedures and assigned mark scheme. Both senior and more junior examiners and moderators play an important part in ensuring our assessment process retains its unrivalled quality.
The benefits of exam marking
Exam marking comes with various benefits; it allows you to improve your management skills and broaden your expertise in the subject matter, while also enabling you to work flexibly around your other commitments. What’s more, when you become an examiner with Eduqas, you get access to professional development training, specialist support, and a network of fellow teachers you can connect with. Eligibility
Our exam marker eligibility criteria includes both qualification and technical aspects. You need to be suitably educated in the subject you’d like to become an examiner for, with evidence to support this. Evidence can include a degree, or a teaching certificate. You also need to have some practical teaching experience in the subject matter, as well as hands-on assessment practice. The exam marker positions are open to UK residents only, and you’d be required to have your own technology which meets our IT system criteria, plus a reliable internet connection. How to Become an Exam Marker
There are several simple steps to follow if you want to become an exam marker with Eduqas. Below, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide:
- Check eligibility – We have different eligibility criteria for our more junior positions compared to more senior examiner roles; make sure to carefully review the relevant list of requirements for the position you’d like.
- Application process – Our exam marker application process is simple; you can submit your application online through our Appointees Portal. Once you’ve filled out the full application, complete with referee details, we’ll reach out to them and review your application accordingly. Successful applicants are added to our reserve list and contacted when a fitting vacancy comes up.
- Training and onboarding – All our new exam markers receive in-depth training throughout the process, from onboarding and learning our internal systems to best practice, subject support, and dedicated marking assistance. Learn more about our examiner support package.
- Exam marking process – Our examiners are typically allocated a set number of scripts to mark over a three-week period, with internal deadlines throughout the process. You’re expected to do marking in your own time, but if you’re having issues meeting the deadlines, our Appointees team can help. Find out more role information.
Working as an Exam Marker
If this is your first time as an examiner or a moderator, we’ll only ask you to do exam marking over the summer months, with the specific dates dictated by the examination assigned to you.
While the time allocated for marking normally comes out of your own time, if you’re required to take time off from your job to attend a training conference, we’ll cover the cost of a substitute.
In addition to our competitive payment package for marking scripts, we support our exam markers with any travel expenses that come up, as well as accommodation where applicable (subject to terms and conditions).
We’re also dedicated to helping you develop your professional skills through top-quality training and guidance. In addition to our Examiner / Moderator training conference, we provide plenty of materials to support exam markers with onboarding, using our systems, and the marking process itself.
