At Eduqas, we’re redesigning our modern foreign language GCSEs from the ground up around the needs of learners. We’ve collaborated with teachers and language experts to develop a suite of new qualifications with a focus on accessibility, flexibility and relevance.
Eduqas’ new French, German and Spanish GCSEs for 2024 will encourage learners to use language to step beyond cultural boundaries, developing their independence and confidence.

Draft specifications are now available for all of our new modern foreign language (MFL) qualifications:
Our draft GCSE French specificaiton is currently undergoing the accreditation process, and our draft Spanish and German specifications will also be submitted for accreditation soon.
Our focus remains on developing specifications that are accessible, flexible and relevant, and we will continue to work closely with Ofqual on developing the new qualifications.

Eduqas’ new modern foreign language GCSEs are each built around five broad contextual themes. These act as suggestions for teaching, rather than assessed themes.
This means teachers can adapt the qualification to the needs of their learners by selecting the contexts they find most relevant and engaging in the classroom, rather than being limited by prescribed themes.
Eduqas teachers will also benefit from access to interactive resources to support them in mapping vocabulary to their chosen themes.
More options for learners
Following positive feedback, our Component 4 writing assessments will retain the optionality amendments from Summer 2022. This means that:
- learners can now choose between three options rather than two from the broad themes in Question 3 on the Foundation Tier/Question 1 on the Higher Tier.
- the assessment has been extended by 5 minutes to allow learners time to consider which option to tackle. The Foundation Tier assessment will last 1 hour 20 minutes, and the Higher Tier assessment 1 hour 35 minutes.
Our new modern foreign language GCSEs will develop your learners’ awareness and understanding of the diverse cultures and communities where languages are spoken.
We have worked with leading language experts to develop the relevant and inclusive vocabulary list at the heart of our qualifications.
This inclusive approach is reflected in our methodology for assessing language, which considers the gender preferences of learners, and our photocard speaking assessments, which include descriptive text for improved accessibility.
