Deciding on the correct tier to enter students for GCSE (9-1) German
Teachers have explained the difficulties they sometimes have in making decisions on which tier is most appropriate for their borderline students. It is important to note that any student at risk of achieving a grade 3 should be entered for the foundation tier and not the higher tier.
We strongly advise you to review your candidates’ summer 2018 results. If you had students achieving a grade 3 on the higher tier, you must seriously consider entering similar students for the foundation tier in summer 2019 and future series. By not taking such action, there is a significant risk that those students will not achieve a qualification. If students are entered for the higher tier, and do not receive sufficient marks to achieve a grade 3, they are at significant risk of receiving a U grade.
